Behind on blogging

I’m alive, but a little behind.  I’ve been trying to sort through my emails and get the number still needing response down to zero, plus barely sleeping.  It’s been a rough past week. A lot of vtONE stuff came up, and I said goodbye to a number of friends.  Congratulations to the VT class of 2006.  Come back and visit!

I’m back in the DC area for about five weeks of work at Digital Sandbox.  I start in a few hours.   After that, I’m hoping to go to Colorado for a week with my family.  Then, I’ll be back in Blacksburg in early July.

Quoted about the Easter Service

Frank Beamer speakingOn Sunday, nlcf joined with Campus Crusade, Athletes in Action, Cornerstone, and Blacksburg United Methodist Church (think Wesley Foundation) for a combined Easter service in Burruss Auditorium. Some of the featured speakers included student athletes and coaches, including football’s head coach Frank Beamer.

The Collegiate Times wrote an article about Beamer’s participation in the service, and they quoted me. The article is at the bottom of the front page, and I’m quoted in the top of the second column.

Overall, I thought the service was well done. Musically, there were some rough edges, but it was great seeing so many people participate in the service. The sermon in two parts was well done, and I thought all of the students and coaches who spoke did a good job. It’s always great to see celebrities talking about their faith in Christ.

Don’t you feel like this some days?

Sharp edges
Don’t you feel like the important stuff is glossed over at the expense of the fluff some days?

Sorry for the blog silence

It’s been a busy last few days. Between meeting with a lot of people (mostly on vtONE stuff), two tests no one was prepared for, and a random afternoon in Roanoke, I’ve kept busy. Here’s a short recap:

Monday: studying for numerical methods test

Tuesday: numerical methods test, two homework assignments that I wasn’t aware of until Monday

Wednesday: classes, random adventure to Roanoke with Chris, featuring picking up a new taillight for my car, dropping off a broken sound board, buying a lifetime supply of printer paper, Best (Worst?) Buy, Harbor Freight Tools (the weirdest hardware store ever), and Krispy Kreme. Yes, I ate five hot original glazed doughnuts in one sitting. Michael, you’re right. I’m a fattie.

Thursday: sleeping in, vtONE dinner meeting, studying for the microprocessor system design (we had no idea what was on it until Thursday evening!), random trip to Joe’s Diner after midnight.

Friday: micro test, helping Ben with getting Fedora on his laptop (part 1 – defragging the drive), Good Friday service at the local Methodist church, grilling kabobs, movie with friends, and conversations until all hours.

Today will be a relaxing day. Tomorrow is the Easter service, and it’s with a number of churches and ministries in the Burruss Auditorium. Frank Beamer (head football coach) is sharing on why the resurrection matters in his life. Should be awesome.

I talk too much!

I just discovered that since March 17 I’ve spent 13 hours talking on my cell phone.  That’s pretty amazing, since my previous phone (which crapped out on me) which I got it June had just over 83 hours on it when I got it replaced.  I averaged about 9 hours a month with that phone, and I’m on track to hit 17 hours in the first month of having this phone.  I’m turning into Mike Swann!  He logs about 3000 minutes (48 hours) a month on his phone.

Amazing footnote

GavelI think this may be the best legalese footnote I’ve ever seen:

A certain four-letter verb for “copulate,” of possible Scandinavian origin (see Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary (1977) p. 463, col. 2) appears frequently in the record along with its gerundive and a related noun involving the maternal parent.

From footnote 1 of this California Court of Appeals opinion.

Engineers Against Cancer?

Sometimes you get a very well intentioned email that makes you stop and think.  This morning, I got an email with the subject Fw: Engineers  Against Cancer.  Even though it came off the ECE department listserv (they forward just shy of 15 billion emails a day), I glanced at the message and got to thinking.  If there’s an engineers against cancer, doesn’t that imply that there’s also engineers FOR cancer?  You could argue that by being indifferent, you are indirectly for cancer, but you usually see the term used when there’s two sides each with clear supporters.  It would make more sense if it were engineers against gun control, because you could also clearly see a group engineers for gun control existing.

Note: The email was actually about the Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society.  It’s a good cause, they just had bad word choice when forwarding it to a group of engineers.

Featured elsewhere

In the past two days, I’ve been mentioned in two other blogs.  While I read and link to both these blogs, I find it amusing that I would get my first and second mention in another blog only a day apart.  Saturday, I was featured (complete with photo!) by Snook for being his second largest referring site.  Sunday, I was mentioned by Erock for my guess on the milage on his new Jeep.  Incedently, Snook and Erock are two of the first people that I met through NLCF during my first week at VT.  Snook actually has the distinction of being the reason that I stuck with NLCF instead of trying more churches.  I prayed going in to the first service that if God wanted me to go to that church, someone would have a meaningful conversation with me.  Let me put it this way: Snook sat in front of me.  I stayed.

For the record, my top referrer is Google.  My second largest referrer is Tim.

Very busy

I’m very busy at the moment, so sorry for the blog slience.  I’m presenting to the Christian Faculty Fellowship today and I have a big micro project due Monday that I need to do a lot of work on.  Also, the last week has been teaching me how to pray.  I should be back next week with more posts.

It’s funny how things work out sometimes

I had this strong desire to write a few specific things in one of my (paper) journals.  I get the journal out and discover I’ve lost my good pen.  I then realize how bad tomorrow would have been if I had gone through all my classes without a proper writing implement.

It’s small things like these that constantly remind me that God is involved in my life.
