Podcasts I keep up with

iPodBefore I jump into the podcasts I listen to, I’m going to describe how I use podcasts. First, my podcasts currently fall into two categories: things that I want to learn about and things that help me escape. Essentially, you could call these categories “educational” and “just for fun.” An interesting note is that currently all of my educational podcasts are audio and all my just for fun podcasts are video.

I listen to audio podcasts at home and in the car. I have three audio podcasts that I generally try to keep up with all the time. The other podcasts I like to follow are saved for as time allows. I find that listening to a good podcast makes a car trip go faster than listening to music, so these podcasts keep me company when I’m on the open road.

Here’s the list of audio podcasts in order of listening priority:

  • NLCF at Virginia Tech
    This podcast is the top of my list, but deceptively so. I don’t keep up with it over most summers and only listen if I’ve been out of town for a Sunday and we’re in a multi-part series.
  • McLean Bible Church
    I listen to this podcast every week. Lon Solomon, the senior pastor of McLean Bible Church is the regular speaker. While I consider MBC my home church, Lon and I disagree on some theological issues (Lon is a dispensationalist, I am not), so some of his sermons have me reaching for my Bible and digging deeper, looking at whether I should agree with him or not. Lon is an outstanding speaker, and I’ve adopted some elements of his style into my speaking. Also, the other speakers are a diverse and top notch crowd.
  • GodPod
    A podcast from Saint Paul’s Theological Centre at Holy Trinity Brompton in the UK. The podcast is hosted by Graham Tomlin (Author of The Provocative Church–a must read), Jane Williams (theologian and wife of the Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Anglican communion), and Mike Lloyd. People email theological questions to GodPod, which are answered by the hosts in a panel fashion. This podcast is unquestionably Anglican and surprisingly charismatic.

  • Frontline Podcasts
    The young adults church within a church at MBC. I know several of the frontline staff, and I’m an active part of frontline when I’m in the DC area. The current team structure at vtONE borrowed largely from how the frontline team is set up. Teaching pastor Todd Philips is the primary speaker, with frequent appearances by worship pastor Will Pavone and college pastor John McGowan. Solid teaching that ranges from dispensational to Calvinist.

  • Kairos Los Angeles Live
    Kairos is an inner city church planted by JR Woodward, who also planted NLCF. JR is huge on the kingdom of God. He’s constantly focusing on how we can bring more of God’s shalom to our immediate surroundings. I don’t listen to every message on this podcast, but try to catch up on most of the ones that JR gave when I’m traveling in the car. Warning: these messages tend to be close to an hour long. JR is postmodern, yet orthodox.

Here’s a wish list of podcasts:

  • The Gathering
    John McGowan is an outstanding speaker who never fails to challenge me through his teachings. He is one of the people that I know who best understands what college ministry should be. I’d be a weekly listener if his current teachings were available online.
    UPDATE: John is now podcasting!  Click the link above to subscribe.
  • NorthPoint Community Church
    Andy Stanley knows how to preach in order to change lives. NorthPoint is also full of other outstanding communicators: Louie Giglio and Tim Elmore come to mind. Too bad that NorthPoint only sells or streams their teachings.

Here’s a list of video podcasts:

  • Strongbad emails and more
    Homestarrunner stuff, mainly the Strongbad emails. What more can I say? Fhwbgads.
  • Ask a Ninja
    People write in and ask a ninja questions. Usually very random. Sometimes barely funny, other times you fall out of your seat from laughing.
  • Hope is Emo
    From the creators of Ask a Ninja. On the verge of getting dropped, since I don’t find most of them funny. A relatively new podcast that I thought might go somewhere, but has been getting worse instead of better.

Coming attractions

Coming Soon!This semester is shaping up to be my busiest yet, but I’m working on a series of posts. The primary intent of these posts is going to be to help equip other college ministry leaders with some of the resources that I’ve found particularly helpful in personally preparing me to do ministry and also resources that have helped me lead vtONE. I’m planning to break this series into one post each about several mediums. I’m going to cover books, podcasts, and blogs for certain. I’m debating three more posts, one covering websites, one an index of theologians who have somehow influenced me, and one about my theological biases (or, what I believe).

The last post is the one that I’m really conflicted about. On one hand, it might make the other posts more helpful if I expose my bias. On the other hand, I am all about unity, and I am always afraid that if I write publicly about a theological gray area it could come back and bite me. Also note that if I do the last post, I will post a quiz first about myself to see how much of a mystery my opinions really are. Feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what you think about that potential post.

Not into theology or spirituality? I’m planning to include all the podcasts I listen to in the podcast post, not just the ones that relate to ministry or theology. I’m also in the planning stages for a series of posts featuring my favorite photographs from the thousands I’ve taken over my lifetime.

Another move today, river tomorrow

I helped Richard move into his sweet pad in Stadium Apartments today.  The highlight was the 8′-6″ long couch that wouldn’t fit in the front door.  Our solution: pass it in the back door via the deck (he’s on the third floor).  Sno and I stood the couch up on end, carried it up the few steps to the edge of the second floor deck (still on end) and lifted it as high as we could.  Richard and JJ caught it upstairs, but couldn’t quite pull it in.  Sno kept the balance while I ran around and joined Richard and JJ.  With three of us, we got the couch over the railing and in the back door.  And we only nearly smashed Richard’s sexy truck in the process.

I also started sanding down the chairs we inherited from 606A.  I have the tops of the chairs sanded, save for the thin back supports.  Hopefully, I’ll get them painted by the weekend.

Somewhere in there, I finished up my second project for Digital Design II.  I’m starting to feel that the end is in sight.

Tomorrow is looking to be a tubing on the river day.  Let me know if you’re interested in joining in.

Some big stuff is going on, so please keep me in your prayers.  Also have two friends who could especially use prayer.  Thanks!

Wise words from Ben Arment

This has to be the shortest blog post I’ve ever seen. I believe it’s something we’re called to do if we’re followers of Christ and this is a good way to think about it.

Something I can’t help but do…

Comfort the afflicted.
Afflict the comfortable.

From Ben Arment’s History in the Making. Direct post link.

That Monday Morning Kind of Faith

One of the most frustrating things that I see is people who call themselves Christians, go to church on Sundays, and wake up Monday morning and live exactly the same as their friends who have never been inside a church.  On Sunday, they pay lip service to God, yet Monday they’re out putting themselves before anything else.  Fudging the numbers to get the results, cheating a client on a business deal, giving into temptations, making bad decisions, using people, it just goes on and on.

I’m sick of people playing pios on Sunday.  Game over.  Your life doesn’t show the fruit of a believer.  I’d rather you not call yourself a believer, a Christian, whatever.  All that does is cheapen the title for those who have made Christ Jesus the head of their lives.  For those of you who have made Jesus the lord of your life, what are you holding back from him?  It’s a huge risk to cast your entire life onto Jesus, but the reward is a relationship now and forever with God.  It’s worth it.

I like the way Donna Lasit from Hillsongs Church in Australia puts it in her song “Believe.”  I don’t want to be satisfied with my life as it is.  I want to be a Monday morning Christian–going as hard after God on a Monday morning in class or at the office as on a Sunday morning at church.  No one said it would be easy, but the benefits far outweigh the costs.

We believe in You
We believe in the power of Your Word and its truth
We believe in You
So we lay down our cause
That our cross might be found in You

I’m not satisfied doing it my own way
I’m not satisfied to do church and walk away
I’m not satisfied, there’s no love in my life but You

I’m not satisfied living in yesterday’s hour
I’m not satisfied to have the form, but not the power
I’m not satisfied, Oh Lord I am crucified in You

Set Free

Breaking FreeThere is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God\’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Lived out Faith

Worship by sxc.hu user mrsdAnd they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-47 ESV)

So often, it’s easy to get discouraged. At times, I’ve even found this text to be discouraging. There’s such a huge disconnect between what happened in Jesus’ day and how most believers live. It’s one of those problems that’s made worse by the fact that most Christians don’t even see a problem. They’re comfortable, and they don’t want to leave the Holy Huddle. What if we chose to believe that God can work through us in powerful ways? What if we chose to live lives so sold out to God that people couldn’t help but notice? What if we committed to lift up this generation in prayer? Let’s stop wondering and start believing.

Renewed

eagle (photo by sxc.hu user dhany)27Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the LORD,
and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
31but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:27-31

It’s much easier said than done. Honestly, I’d rather do things my way instead of God’s. I’d rather do things when I want to do them, not when God says it’s time.  I have to keep reminding myself that God’s plan is infinitely better than anything that I could imagine, so even if it doesn’t look like it makes sense at the time, I’ll be better off choosing God’s plan.  Think about that today: are you choosing your comfortable plan or God’s adventue?  Even though the right choice is not the safe choice, God will provide for all your needs along the way.

The DaVinci Code

The DaVinci CodeYes, I’ve read the book.
No, I haven’t seen the movie (yet).
Yes, I enjoyed it–I’d even recommend it.
No, it’s history isn’t very accurate (including the facts page).
Yes, I tried to write a longer version of this post and the browser crashed (twice).
No, I’m not going to expose all the inaccuracies of the book.

Here’s a really interesting link about why people find The DaVinci Code fascinating.

The DaVinci Code is fiction, but a lot of people believe its inaccurate historical claims. The best look at the claims of the DaVinci code with response that I’ve seen was done by Ken Baugh at Frontline in late 2003. Go here and scroll way down (3rd from the bottom) to the “Beyond The DaVinci Code” series for responses to many of the claims made by the book. Also, if you have specific questions about The DaVinci Code and related topics, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

vtONE site redesign

vtONEI just finished a redesign of the vtONE site. Take a look and let me know what you think. And yes, I borrowed extensively from the recent redesign of this site.
